Rome, 29 March 2024 – The investigators of the State Police of the IX Exposure District have subjected arrest of a 45-year-old crime suspect Italian because he is seriously suspected of crime of arson.
Specifically, the policemen, during the usual territorial control service, at the disposal of the Operations Room, intervened in via Castel di Leva to report a a fire that had affected a garage. Once on site, the officers found one of the garage's associates who reported that in the last period he had had several arguments with a former employee who threatened and insulted him via a well-known “messaging app” following dismissal occurred last January.
The investigators, thanks to the vision of the images from the video surveillance system of the garage, they ascertained that, on the night of March 22nd, a manmisrepresented and wearing dark clothes, had headed towards a car covered by a tarpaulin and then poured a canister containing flammable liquid. After a few moments, the man put the can on the ground and then took it a lighter and set fire to the area where he had spilled the liquid. The operators then expanded the investigations, viewing other video surveillance systems of some nearby fuel stations, ascertaining that the man, before accessing the garage, had gone to an automatic distributor in via Castel di Leva and, after inserting a 10 euro banknote, he refilled the tank.
From further investigations the officers found that the man had been using his partner's car all the time, recognized by the missing petrol cap, which hadthe same color and the same wheel rims as the car seen through the cameras of the video surveillance system.
For these reasons, investigators tracked down the 45-year-old at his home and placed him under arrest as a crime suspect because he was seriously suspected of committing the crime of arson. The Rome Prosecutor's Office requested and obtained from the Preliminary Investigation Judge the validation of the arrest and the adoption of precautionary custody in prison. The man was associated with the “Regina Coeli” prison.
For the record, and for the protection of those under investigation, we would like to remind you that an accusation is not equivalent to a conviction, that the evidence is gathered in court and that the Italian judicial system still provides for three levels of judgement.
