A group of people were traveling by bus from Gaborone towards Botswana, to Moria, near the city of Polokwane when they suffered an accident that cost them their lives.
They were heading towards an Easter pilgrimage when the vehicle fell from the Mamatlakala Bridge, into a ravine about 50 meters deep, in the province of Limpopo, in northern South Africa. They died45 of the 46 parishioners who were traveling when the bus plunged into the abyss. A minor of eight years he has been the only survivor of the fatal accident, which had to be transferred to a hospital.
The spokesperson for the National Department of Transport, Collen Msibi, explained that the driver lost control and crashed into the bridge guardrail. The bus rushed into the ravine and caught fire when hitting the ground.
Rescue operations continued until late into the night of Thursday, March 28, when some bodies were burned and others trapped in the rubble.
“I send my deepest condolences to the families affected by the tragic bus accident near Mamatlakala. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time,” said South African Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikung.
