In FC Bayern's ongoing search for a coach, Xabi Alonso will remain the German record champions' preferred candidate. That will probably only change if there is an unequivocal rejection from the head coach of Bayer Leverkusen.
Nevertheless, it seems as if behind closed doors the people of Munich no longer really believe in Alonso's possible signing. At least surprisingly open statements from Uli Hoeneß allow such a conclusion.
Opposite BR24 the honorary president said on record (via Bild): “I personally, we all, have extremely high regard for Xabi Alonso, but you mustn't forget that he is now training for a club that is currently in the process of becoming German champions.”
Accordingly, the coach has “a lot to thank” his club, as well as the other way around. From the way Hoeneß himself got to know him during his time at Bayern, he could certainly imagine “that he would be more inclined to carry on because he doesn't want to, let's say, leave it behind.”
“If he had had more success for two or three years, it would probably be easier to get him out of there. We'll see whether that will be successful this year, it will be very difficult, not to say probably impossible,” said Hoeneß with great enthusiasm clear words.
Just a move in the spirit of the talks with Alonso, or did the 72-year-old simply say openly what was going on behind closed doors on Säbener Strasse?
That remains to be seen. At least FC Bayern's possible alternatives to Alonso have recently come into greater focus. While the Bild and also Sky Roberto De Zerbi was more about the topic, which he brought kicker Ralf Rangnick also came into play this Thursday (90min reported).
