Those of you who follow gaming news intensely will likely be familiar with the action of closing and selling developers that Embracer Group is currently actively carrying out. After the crazy buying action they carried out, this action ended up having to be carried out after failure to lock in investments worth billions of USD which ended fatally. After closing dev. Saints Row – Volition and also selling Saber Interactive to a third party, Embracer Group finally took a similar step to Gearbox Software – dev. behind the famous looter shooter game – Borderlands. Gearbox is now officially under the Take Two Interactive banner.
After being bought for around USD 1.3 billion in 2021, Embracer Group officially “sold at a loss” Gearbox to Take Two Interactive for “only” around USD 460 million. Together with this sale, Take Two Interactive is now officially the owner of: Gearbox Software, Gearbox Montreal, Gearbox Studio Quebec, the Borderlands and Tiny Tina's Wonderlands franchises, as well as Homeworld, Risk of Rain, Brothers in Arms, and Duke Nukem.
Meanwhile Embracer Group retains: Gearbox Publishing San Francisco, as well as publishing rights to the Remnant and Hyper Light Breaker franchises. They also remain the owners of Cryptic Studios (Neverwinter Online), Lost Boys Interactive, and Captured Dimensions.
Gearbox Boss – Randy Pitchford also expressed his optimism that the new ownership under Take Two Interactive will continue to provide Gearbox with the space to achieve creativity, happiness and of course profits. He believes Gearbox will level up with this decision.
Embracer Group also emphasized that this sale would make their financial condition much healthier. What do you think? The gearbox is now in good hands?
