Last year, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 was released, a game that boasted the return of this branch of the most famous franchise in the field of shooters, and that clearly sold quite a few copies despite not innovating too much in terms of the campaign as well as online. Something that is not denied is its level of graphic quality, raising the question among many of how much money Activision must have invested to release its game and put it on sale in physical or digital format.
A recent judicial report has revealed that the development costs of some titles in the saga between 2015 and 2020 have reached unprecedented figures in the video game industry. According to Patrick Kelly, Activision’s chief creative officer for the franchise, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s budget ranged from $450 million to $700 million, setting a new record in the sector.
These costs, reviewed in a legal filing, represent the highest figures recorded for the development of a video game by a major company. They significantly exceed previously estimated or reported budgets, consolidating Call of Duty as one of the most ambitious and expensive franchises in the field of interactive entertainment.
The development not only involves the creation of its gameplay, but also large investments in graphic design, motion capture, film production and massive advertising campaigns. This is reflected in the constant success of the saga, which has been a pillar in the gaming industry for more than a decade.
Despite the enormous costs, Activision has maintained its commitment to large-scale productions, justifying these figures with the commercial and cultural impact of the series. This new data underlines the enormous financial commitment behind each delivery. With this in mind, it can be thought that the latest installment of Black Ops is oscillating between the aforementioned amounts, implying that the costs are increasingly higher.
The game is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
