Tim Miller and Dave Wilson, the creators of the animated series, have revealed that they tried to include a crossover episode between two iconic characters: Master Chief (Halo) and Doom Slayer (Doom). However, the proposal was rejected by both Microsoft and id Software, leaving fans to imagine what could have been the result.
The first season of Secret Level adapts 15 different video games through animated episodes, with selections that have surprised the public. In an interview, the creators discussed the challenges of choosing titles and securing intellectual property rights for their adaptations.
Dave Wilson explained that both he and Miller were excited to explore crossovers that don’t exist. “We wanted to do an episode between Master Chief and Doom Slayer, and I spent an entire weekend writing a passionate letter based on my childhood memories. But, in the end, we received a ‘no’ as an answer,” he confessed.
Miller mentioned that they applied for the rights to work with other iconic properties, such as Half-Life, but were unable to move forward either. “We would love to do something broader and more ambitious, but permissions for these IPs are not easy to obtain,” he explained. Despite the limitations, he assured that they are proud of the result and that there are still many stories they could tell: “We could do 10 seasons and still not run out of games that we like.”
Although the crossover between Master Chief and Doom Slayer did not come to fruition, the series has managed to capture attention with its unique and varied approach, leaving the door open for future projects that continue to explore the vast universe of video games. Furthermore, since a second season has already been announced, and its success has already been seen, it is very possible that the license owners will not refuse to lend the characters this time.
Remember that you can watch the show on Prime Video.
