A couple of years ago, a film called Suzume was released, which was quite liked by the public that was just joining the Japanese animation market. This was in part supported by the success that Your Name achieved at the time, opening the panorama towards an audience not only niche. And it seems that they do not want to let go of the wave of successes, so a new production could already be on the way.
Director Makoto Shinkai has revealed through his X account that he has dedicated 2024 to working on his next film. In a New Year’s message, he described the process as a “great joy of building a new world that no one has seen before” and promised to share details with his followers in 2025.
Happy new year! For me, 2024 was a year spent working on new movies. It’s a great pleasure to work with my friends to create a new world that no one has ever seen before, starting from scratch. I will do my best to let you know in some way this year. I hope 2025 will be a peaceful year for everyone.

Meanwhile, fans can look forward to the live-action adaptation of 5 Centimeters per Second, scheduled for release in fall 2025. SixTONES’ Hokuto Matsumura will play Takaki Tono, reprising his collaboration with Shinkai after voicing Souta Munakata in Suzume. Along with him, Nanoka Hara, known for her role as Kana Arima in Oshi no Ko, will also be part of the cast.
It is speculated that Shinkai’s new film could coincide with the opening of CWF CINEMAS in summer 2026. This cinema, located in Saku, the director’s hometown, is a project led by him in collaboration with CoMix Wave Films. The room promises to become a space dedicated to animated cinema, highlighting the legacy of Shinkai and his creative team.
This director remains one of the most influential figures in the anime industry. Details about his next project are awaited with great anticipation, promising to further expand his impact on contemporary cinema. Several of his films are now available for streaming.
