We are facing a time in which many productions for television and cinema are based on stories like those of video games, and we saw that not so long ago with the launch of the third Sonic The Hedgehog movie, the Arcane series and within a Another year the sequel to Super Mario arrives. On the other hand, there are projects that remain simple promises that are never fulfilled, and news that was already expected was just revealed regarding a certain moderately popular franchise.
The long-awaited film project based on Sleeping Dogs has officially been cancelled, actor Donnie Yen revealed in a recent interview. The adaptation, first announced in 2017, would have featured Yen in the role of Wei Shen, the protagonist of the 2012 game set in Hong Kong. However, after years of attempts and development, he confirmed that the film is no longer in the works.
“I spent a lot of time and worked a lot with these producers, and even invested some of my own money to get drafts and some rights,” he said during a Zoom call. “I waited for years and I really wanted to do it. I had all these visions in my head, but unfortunately, you know how Hollywood works. “It was unfortunate.”
The project had generated high expectations thanks to the involvement of action cinema master Timo Tjahjanto (The Night Comes for Us) as a possible director. However, the lack of updates in recent years, including a release date or additional details, had already left fans with little hope that the film would materialize despite the hopes of wanting it.
For Sleeping Dogs fans, this is not the first disappointment related to the franchise. A sequel and spin-off of the game were also canceled in the past decade. Despite everything, the original title remains a classic among action video games, thanks to its narrative inspired by Hong Kong crime thrillers and its martial arts mechanics that evoke the most iconic films of the genre. So you can still try it on modern devices.
