In 2012, Sony confirmed that a Shadow of the Colossus movie was already in development, after several years of rumors. However, more than a decade has passed, and this project still has not made it to the big screen. Fortunately, it looks like the wait is about to end.
In a recent interview in La Baulera del Coso, Andrés Muschietti, director who has been involved in this project for 10 years, revealed that the Shadow of the Colossus movie has not been canceled, and there is even already a script. This is what he said about it:
“I’m not a big gamer, but Shadow of the Colossus seems like a masterpiece to me, and I’ve played it several times. The film has been in development for 10 years, and now the possibility of making it opens up.
Shadow of the Colossus is a cult game, but to make a good movie, there is a studio that puts the numbers and says how much it is worth to give the director $200 million, $150 million or $100 million. “There are different versions of the movie, and obviously, I want them to give me $200 million, but this is another factor to take into account.”
Although it seems that the project is finally moving forward, at the moment there is no more information about this film, and it is unknown when the film will hit theaters. In the purest style of a work by Fumito Ueda, the wait will be long, so we must not lose hope.
Let’s remember that Sony is still very interested in bringing Sony properties to the big screen. Just during its last presentation at CES 2025, the company announced Helldivers films, Horizon Zero Dawn, and a Ghost of Tsushima anime, so it is clear that the company has in mind to take its properties to new territories, no matter how much late. Author’s Note:
A Shadow of the Colossus movie sounds like a bad idea. The original work on the PlayStation 2 is an introspective adventure that works perfectly when criticizing the player’s violence. However, this doesn’t work on the big screen, so changes surely have to be made that alter the way the story and everything else works.
