According to a recent rumor, Capcom is working on a remake and film adaptation of the Resident Evil Zero video game.
The well-known insider AestheticGamer (aka Dusk Golem) through his X account has shared various information about the future of the Capcom survival horror series.
The insider spoke about the fact that Screen Gems and Constantin Films have an existing contract with the Japanese company, which allows them to retain the film rights to the Resident Evil brand. However, to prevent these rights from lapsing, they will necessarily have to release a new Resident Evil film within five fiscal years.
Given the contractual obligation, the next Resident Evil film, which will begin filming shortly under the direction of Zach Cregge, will necessarily have to arrive in theaters before the end of fiscal 2026. Screen Gems and Constantin Films have respectively distributed and Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City product, released in fiscal 2021, and the five fiscal years will expire in 2026.
According to Dusk Golem, it seems that this new film in the franchise will be an adaptation of Resident Evil Zero, with Rebecca and Billy as the main characters of the story.
The insider also said Capcom would be working on the remake of the aforementioned Resident Evil Zero, but the most interesting detail is that this remake could make its debut exclusively on the new Nintendo console, currently known online as Switch 2.
Dusk Golem pointed out that the title will still be multiplatform and that the exclusivity on Switch 2 will be temporal. Furthermore, for the insider there wouldn’t be a better time to release a remake of Resident Evil Zero, as it would also tie in with the 30th anniversary of the series and the release of Cregge’s live-action film.
The possible exclusivity on Switch 2 could be a reference to the past, given that the original was released in 2002 exclusively on GameCube and only several years later arrived on consoles not produced by Nintendo.
As for Resident Evil 9, we already know that Capcom is already working on the title, but Dusk Golem has revealed that it could arrive by the end of 2026. According to Golem, Capcom wants to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the saga by releasing the remake of Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil 9, which symbolize the beginning and end of an era for the series.
Although this news has not been confirmed by official sources, Dusk Golem is practically a certainty when it comes to Resident Evil and in the past it has anticipated several of Capcom’s moves related to the iconic horror franchise.
