Seven years after the last cinematic incarnation of the iconic Universal monster, in the last few hours it has been announced that in 2026 the mummy will return to the cinema with a new feature film.
The mummy is one of the most famous creatures in the world of cinema and, although it was the protagonist of several films between the 1930s and the 1970s, its pop iconicity is due to the three films of the 2000s starring Brendan Fraser as Rick O’Connell.
The last film to feature this creature came out in 2017, namely The Mummy with Tom Cruise which was supposed to launch Universal’s Dark Universe, a project that foundered after the commercial failure of the aforementioned film.
The new film will be produced by Blumhouse and will be directed by Lee Cronin, director and screenwriter of The House: Rise of Evil. In the short press release, Cronin explained that his film will be unlike any other feature film starring the mummy. The film will be co-produced by Cronin’s Doppelgängers company, Jason Blum’s aforementioned Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster.
While The Mummy is known to be a Universal intellectual property, this new film will be produced and distributed by New Line, who previously collaborated with Cronin on the latest installment of the House franchise.
