SEGA president Shuji Utsumi spoke about the future of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise after the recent Sonic Frontiers.
Utsumi said that the next game in the saga will be one of the most important projects for the company and that it will be “pretty exciting”. He was also asked if it would be a sequel to Sonic Adventure, and to this question, he responded that the original two games were “a turning point for Sonic”, neither confirming nor denying this. Shuji Utsumi then added the following:
When we release it, it will have to be beautiful, impressive – we have to meet or even exceed people’s expectations, so it will take time.
Shuji Utsumi also spoke about the possibility that SEGA could develop a subscription service similar to Xbox Game Pass and Ubisoft+ in the future. This would allow players to pay a monthly subscription fee so they could have free access to a vast library of SEGA-branded games on their consoles and PCs. Here are his words on the matter:
Subscription services are very interesting and we are evaluating some opportunities at the moment. We are thinking about the future and are discussing something that we cannot reveal at this time.
Still nothing concrete at the moment, so we can’t do anything other than wait for new official information on the future of Sonic and on this SEGA subscription service.
