Through an interview it comes to light that the team behind Mario & Luigi: Brothership once considered the game to be HD-2D, in the style of Octopath Traveler.
All because it is a development by Acquire, the studio in charge of said series. This was revealed by the game’s co-producer, Akira Otani, in a talk posted on Nintendo’s website. This is part of a series dedicated to interviewing developers of their games.
When talking about Mario & Luigi: Brothership, Otani commented ‘there was a point where I thought an approach like Octopath Traveler might be a possibility.’

He then noted ‘however, the previous Mario & Luigi games were (with) pixel art, and the packaging art, etc., consisted of drawn illustrations.’ The latter was what led him to consider how to handle this sequel to a series that was born on the Game Boy Advance in 2003.

Akira Otani noted ‘for other Mario games, the graphics design and main illustration are in line, but since they didn’t for the previous Mario & Luigi games, I thought it might have been harder for consumers to recognize what type of game was’.
Afterwards, he highlighted ‘I wanted to align the game and art in some world. That’s because my dream was to make the next one in 3D.’ That was what defined the look of Mario & Luigi: Brothership.
The 3D designs of this video game recreate the appearance of the previous installments of the series very well. It’s hard for some to imagine what Mario & Luigi: Brothership would have been like in a style similar to HD-2D.
Haruyuki Ohashi, the game’s director, noted how great the animation was in past Mario & Luigi games, and didn’t think it would be easy to make something at that level or better. So they preferred to do it in 3D to add new elements.
