The web version of Apple’s maps app will receive the option to explore streets from a pedestrian-level perspective. This functionality is called “Look Around” and you can activate it as you would in the app for devices such as the iPhone or iPad. To do this, select the binoculars icon located at the bottom left of the map window. Then, you can click and drag on the map to explore different areas in first person.
This advancement brings the web version of Apple Maps closer to being on par with the iOS app, although it still lacks features like instantly finding addresses from your contacts or the ability to save specific locations.
This feature reminds us of the same feature found in its main competitor, Google Maps. But despite the similarities, Apple Maps will only have access to a relatively short list of cities, compared to Google’s extensive catalog of street and rural photography.
While Apple is still a long way from being a global challenger to Google in the mapping apps department, many users highlight how convenient Apple Maps is compared to the competition, making it a viable alternative in those select cities where the app offers all its functions.
