For those who don’t know, this month The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim was released in theaters, a film that promised to be the glorious return of the franchise to the big screen, adding a special collaboration with established anime studios from Japan. However, this has not been enough for the box office to be acceptable, becoming once again a failure for Warner this year, the first being in October, we are talking about the Joker sequel.
The film has arrived on digital platforms, offering a new opportunity for fans to enjoy this epic story set in Middle Earth. The film, to the surprise of many, can now be seen on services such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home, allowing users to take a look, in case they have chosen to skip it in theaters.
Despite being an installment within the Lord of the Rings universe, the film had a disappointing performance at the box office, grossing only $15 million worldwide against an estimated budget of $30 million. Many attribute this result to an ineffective marketing campaign that left several fans without even finding out about the premiere. However, its arrival in services could give it a new life, attracting a wider audience.
The animation of The Rohirrim War has been a source of debate among viewers. Although some applauded the attempt to mix 2D and 3D animation techniques, others considered that the final result failed to fully capture the visual spirit of the saga. As for the narrative, although the story of revenge and war starring Helm and Wulf has been considered good, some viewers noted that it relied too much on clichés.
Despite criticism, the film expands the Lord of the Rings universe by exploring a period before the main trilogy. With a plot set 183 years before the events of Frodo and company, this installment delves into the conflicts of Rohan and promises a different experience for those who want to explore more of Tolkien’s rich mythology. Now available in, it is a good time for new viewers to get closer to the story and for long-time fans to decide if this installment meets expectations.
It goes without saying that it is available to rent or buy, it has not yet been integrated into the platforms’ catalogue. There is no date yet for the latter.
