James Gunn’s DCEU has already officially confirmed who will be a renowned member of the Green Lantern Corps, who will be in charge of adapting the iconic John Stewart to live action for the first time in Lanterns. John Stewart is just one more character of many who have used the Green Lantern moniker, but he is possibly one of the most beloved. Known for his leadership and strategy in combat, John Stewart is one of the most popular Green Lanterns in DC comics.
Learn about John Stewart’s story before his debut in James Gunn’s DCEU
Now, John Stewart is set to appear alongside the more famous Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, in the upcoming Lanterns series in James Gunn’s DCEU reboot. This reboot is an exhaustive review of DC productions on the big screen. One of the main projects is the Lanterns series, which aims to focus on John Stewart and Hal Jordan, who will investigate a dark mystery that will tie into the broader DCEU narrative.
In Lanterns, Aaron Pierre has been chosen to play the role of John Stewart. The casting of Aaron Pierre is part of a broader makeover in the DCEU under the direction of James Gunn and Peter Safran, who are taking a more hands-on approach to ensure characters are portrayed with much more depth.
Character-wise, as the first African-American Green Lantern, John Stewart emerged at a time when comics were increasingly reflecting social changes and diversity in American society.
In the DC comics, John Stewart was an architect and a Marine, a combination that has proven very important in his role as a dedicated member of the Green Lantern Corps. That military background gives him a strong sense of discipline, while his knowledge of architecture allows him to create much more creative constructions with his Green Lantern ring.
After becoming Green Lantern, John Stewart’s arrogance led him to believe he could single-handedly save the planet from destruction, but his failure led to the deaths of billions of people. This moment became a crucial aspect that would forever mark his personality, forcing him to face his own inner demons until he became a more responsible hero.
The way the DCEU treats John Stewart’s development will likely be somewhat slow, which will help the character mature throughout the multiple films and series to come. Although it is unknown if he will become the definitive Green Lantern in the same way he did in the comics, John Stewart should establish himself as a major figure, and his arrival in Lanterns will surely have a big impact on the DC franchise.
The Lanterns series does not yet have an official premiere date.
