We often hear about how life tends to get longer and longer every day, but unfortunately at the same time we need to point out that Baby boomers enjoy worse health than previous generations. This was revealed by a recent study carried out by researchers at the University of Oxford and University College London (UCL).
A study that has shed light on the issue and discovered that today’s fifty and sixty-year-olds, compared to previous generations at the same age, have a greater chance of developing rather serious health problems. Laura Gimeno, lead author of the study intervened on the issue by stating that compared to its predecessors people born from 1945 onwards are at greater risk of disability and chronic diseases.
The work done by researchers
In order to carry out the study in question, the scholars subjected to analysis, between 2004 and 2018, the health data belonging to more than 100,000 people. The people under examination belonged to different generations and specifically their age was equal to or greater than 50 years and they were linked to specific areas such as Europe, England and the United States.
The analysis, and specifically the comparison of the data belonging to people born between 1936 and 1945 with those of people born between 1955 and 1959, made it possible to highlight the increase in the rate of chronic diseases. Adults born more recently therefore appear to have a greater chance of developing type 2 diabetes, heart problems, lung disease, cancer and high cholesterol. Gimeno concluded by stating that if life expectancy remains stable or even continues to improve, these currently worrying trends could become even more so. This is because “could cause younger generations to spend more years in poor health and with disabilities.”
