You have read a lot about the road tax for electric cars in 2025. The petrol users who now feel disadvantaged: don’t worry, you have not been forgotten. In seven provinces, road taxes will increase in 2025 for all motorists. TopGear Netherlands delved into the twelve budgets to see what the road tax will be in 2025 per province.
In the Netherlands, the government determines every year the maximum motor vehicle tax. Based on this so-called surcharge rate, provinces can determine for themselves what the road tax will be. The maximum rate this year is 138.3 and in 2025 this rate will increase to 147.1. By the way, no province asks for the maximum amount; they are all well below that.
You can forget the story about surcharges, because the most important thing is that we can calculate a percentage increase with these rates. The smallest increase is in Flevoland, where the MRB increases by only 1.08 percent. In other provinces the increase is between 2.54 and 3.37 percent. At the bottom of the page you will find a table with all increases per province.
South Holland will remain the most expensive province for road tax in 2025
The main source of income for South Holland is road tax. In the budget they even say that motor vehicle tax is half of all earnings. You understand that they charge a high rate. South Holland will remain the most expensive province in 2025, but Gelderland is sprinting and recording the largest increase.
North Holland remains the cheapest
Groningen, Drenthe, Zeeland, Overijssel and North Holland will not increase road tax in 2025. This means that North Holland retains its position as the province with the lowest motor vehicle tax. Since South Holland does increase the MRB, the difference between the provinces is no longer 27.5 percent, but 131 percent.
