Change at the top in via San Vitale, with Roberto Massucci taking office: “Italy is at alert level 2, which is the one before the terrorist attack: the attention is very high”
Rome, 2 October 2024 – Roberto Massucci has officially taken possession of his position as the new police commissioner of Rome, settling in the San Vitale headquarters. Massucci succeeds Carmine Belfiore, who played a crucial role in managing security in the capital, especially in a period characterized by large-scale events, such as the preparation for the Jubilee or the over 150 processions organized under his mandate. During the inauguration ceremony, Massucci underlined the importance of his new role, stating: “Being police commissioner of Rome, and particularly in a period like this, represents a great responsibility. The safety of citizens and tourists is an absolute priority”.
Massucci, already known for his experience in the field of public safety, has already demonstrated great commitment and dedication in his previous roles. His appointment comes at a delicate moment, in which Rome prepares to face the arrival of over 30 million pilgrims in view of the Holy Yearwhich will launch in January 2025.
“Jubilee, the attention to terrorism is very high”
The new Commissioner also declared: “It will be essential to work in synergy with all the institutions and law enforcement agencies to guarantee a safe and peaceful Jubilee. If it is true that we had an extraordinary Jubilee in the times of ISIS, the times we are living in now are not much more serene. The country’s alert level is level two, which is the one before the terrorist attack, so the attention is very high“.
“Like all major events that activate a significant flow of money, there is a need to activate the control room, which had already been activated by the police, with the coordination of the prefecture, which has the coordination of the anti-mafia. The work that is being done is constant and the spotlight is very high. We realize that this flow of money could actually trigger interests from which Rome is historically not immune. The level of prevention must be kept high with regards to the management of public safety” underlined Massucci.
“I will have two eyes on curves”
“I will have two eyes on the curvesbecause what happens inside the stadium matters. Being ultra is not in itself a negative value, but in compliance with the law. The spotlights on the curves of the Olympic Stadium will always be on”the new Police Commissioner then stated, in reference to the blitz that led to the arrest of dozens of Inter and Milan ultras in recent days (read here).
“Terms? Let’s move forward with determination”
With reference to Termini, Massucci said: “Petty crime has become organised, for the subway we are working on PolMetro, i.e. police officers who travel on the subway. At Termini station we need to move forward with determination and we can all work together“. (Photo: poliziadistato.it)
