The big announcement that Sony had in store for the latest State of Play to date was Ghost of Yōtei, the sequel to one of the great releases in the PS4 catalog, Ghost of Tsushima, which will land in 2025, when PS5 Pro is already installed in the market. At the moment it is not known the exact moment in which it will be available as well as its plot, beyond the fact that it will take place many years after the events experienced with Jin Sakai. Now, Sucker Punch has explained the way in which they want to surpass its predecessor.
The person in charge of making it known was Jason Conell, director of the game, in an interview given to The New York Times. In it, he explains what the main inspirations for the game were and how they will translate them into the experience of the title. “When we started working on a sequel, the first question we asked ourselves was: what is the DNA of a Ghost game? It is about transporting the player to the romance and beauty of feudal Japan. I stayed there for two hours just looking at the mountain. It was impressive. One of the challenges when making an open world game is the repetitive nature of doing the same thing over and over again. We wanted to counteract that and find unique experiences. Inside the park (referring to Shiretoko National Park), you have to watch a video that tells you about the dangers of bears. Being in this incredibly beautiful park with steep cliffs and water, and at the same time being aware that there were dangerous bears, was electrifying. We strive to bring that feeling of danger to the video game.”
Therefore, it seems that there will be many new elements to explore in Ghost of Yōtei so that it can feel like something different from what was seen in Ghost of Tsushima. We will have to wait to find out how all this translates when it is available in the PS5 catalog in 2025.
Sucker Punch wants to continue expanding the Ghost of universe in the future
The announcement of Ghost of Yōtei has marked a before and after for the franchise that began with Ghost of Tsushima, transforming what began as an independent game into the core of a broader series that now includes, in addition to new titles, a movie and other derived projects. The first film project in the saga is under the direction of Chad Stahelski, known for his work on John Wick: Chapter 4, which promises an action-packed and visually spectacular approach. Ghost of Yōtei will transport us to the year 1603, introducing players to a new protagonist named Atsu, who becomes the “ghost” of this installment.
On his journey, Atsu will travel through the vast landscapes that surround the majestic Mount Yōtei, a region marked by geographical diversity that will include everything from endless grasslands to snow-covered tundras. However, these lands will not only be full of beauty, but also unexpected dangers that will test your skill and determination. This new chapter promises to expand the world that Sucker Punch created with Ghost of Tsushima, providing new stories and experiences without leaving aside the iconic style and atmosphere that conquered players in the first installment. Ghost of Yōtei will be another step in the consolidation of the saga as one of the great franchises in the world of video games.
