There are over 100 confirmed cases of Dengue in Fano and half of the people affected have been hospitalized. This is what Adnkronos Salute learned after the meeting between the experts of the Ministry of Health, the Marche Region, the National Blood Center, the National Transplant Center, the Infectious Diseases Department of the ISS, the National Reference Center for the study and the detection of exotic animal diseases (Cesme).
The Marche Region “reports that as of 30 September 2024, 102 confirmed and 10 probable cases have been recorded. An increase in cases is reported in the last 7 days due to the increase in diagnostic confirmations but without a real increase in the incidence of cases, which, after two peaks recorded on 6 and 14 September, would appear to be decreasing (last case with onset of symptoms on 25 September. And an overall increase is reported to be under control”. It is reported that “the area with positive cases does not appear to be extending, but that it always remains confined to the Fano area”.
It is reported by the Marche Region, “that all cases present Fano as the place of exposure, including some non-resident patients who nevertheless have a robust link with Fano”. The cases were all seen “by the Fano emergency room, the other emergency rooms were alerted by regional note in order to intercept possible further cases (those testing negative are currently in greater numbers than in the first weeks of September)”.
New large-scale disinfestations arranged
Regarding disinfestation activities, it is reported that, “in addition to those already carried out, the need for new large-scale disinfestations was indicated to the Municipality” but “critical issues” emerged from the meeting which have yet to be clearly identified. For example, “larvicidal treatments in drains in public areas were not simultaneous throughout the urban area but were conducted in spot mode based on the onset of new cases”. Furthermore, among the critical issues that emerged was the “evaluation of the effectiveness of disinfestations, sometimes carried out in non-optimal environmental conditions due to the conformation of the territory and the weather conditions”.
Hospitalizations for precautionary purposes
Regarding the clinical conditions of Dengue cases, “half required hospitalization in Infectious Diseases, Medicine, Paediatrics, Geriatrics and Neurology departments but mostly for precautionary purposes. Only one case presented hypovolemic shock in the defervescence phase. One case pediatrician is in good condition”.
“Active surveillance of asymptomatic people is needed”
Regarding the active search for cases, it is reported that “it was limited to symptomatic subjects identified in the area (family doctors and paediatricians of free choice) and that possible asymptomatic cases were not actively investigated, such as relatives of confirmed cases” .
But to combat the Fano outbreak, “active surveillance of asymptomatic cases” such as cohabitants of confirmed cases is needed, “in order to understand their possible role in maintaining the transmission cycle” and “the free offer of tests is recommended “.
