A video game fan had a lucky moment when he discovered an impressive collection of retro consoles and games in a friend’s forgotten garage. For what appeared to be just an old box collecting dust turned out to contain a variety of iconic Game Boy titles that sparked both nostalgia and excitement in the gaming community.
User cajun_metabolic, who shared his find on Reddit, explained that his friend had saved several Game Boys and games in his garage years ago, but over time he had completely forgotten about their existence. It was only when a Reddit user accidentally stumbled upon the box that the collection saw the light of day again, and fortunately for him, his friend showed no interest in keeping the items and allowed him to take them for free.
Among the treasures found were two consoles, a Game Boy Color and a Game Boy Advance SP, both in a state that reflected the passage of time. But years of neglect, including a flood that affected the garage, had left obvious marks on both the consoles and cartridges, however, the highlight of the collection were the games he found. For the same reason, he did not hesitate for a moment to ask his friend if he could sell them to him, to which he received the answer “keep them”, which gave him a great loot and for free.
Among the titles were some true gems from the past such as Pokémon Red, Pokémon Crystal, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past & Four Swords and Advance Wars 2. For any collector or fan of the golden era of handheld video games, This list represents the best of the ’90s and early ’00s, and while many of these games can fetch high prices on the auction market, cajun_metabolic showed no interest in selling them.
His main objective was to restore them and replay those classics that marked his youth, enjoying the experience of reliving these titles for the pure love of video games, instead of seeking economic benefit.
The challenge of restoring old cartridges
However, not everything was nostalgia and joy, since restoring the cartridges did not turn out to be an easy task; time and the conditions of the garage had left the cartridges in a state of considerable deterioration. According to the user, many of the cartridge contacts showed corrosion and oxidation, which made an intensive cleaning process necessary.
Equipped with a toothbrush and an eraser, cajun_metabolic set about cleaning the contacts to ensure the games worked properly without having to adjust the cartridges into the Game Boy slot. Despite the tedious nature of the work, the cleaning process was satisfactory.
Although some cartridges, such as Dragon Ball Z Taiketsu, showed visible signs of corrosion damage, with marks that were difficult to remove, he eventually managed to get all the games working properly.
The community on Reddit applauded the effort, and while some found the process relaxing, cajun_metabolic commented that while it was fun to restore games, he wouldn’t necessarily describe it as a relaxing task, due to the amount of effort it took to remove the severe corrosion. Still, the discovery of this collection allowed the player to recover a piece of his childhood and preserve these relics of the past.
