In September 2024, the Italian car market recorded a decline of 11.4%, with over 120,000 new cars sold. In the first nine months of the year, registrations well exceeded 1 million vehicles, with modest growth of 2.1% compared to 2023, but a sharp decline of 18.1% compared to the same period in 2019, before the pandemic. Although Italian GDP has recovered pre-crisis levels, the automotive sector continues to show significant difficulties. Projecting the current results, it is foreseeable that 2024 will close with 1,603,000 registrations, well below the 1,916,951 of 2019.
How many cars were sold in September 2024
The Italian car market recorded a total of 121,666 new registrations in September compared to 136,316 units in the same month of 2023. In the first nine months of the year, 1,202,122 new cars were sold, with market growth slowing at 2.1% compared to the same period in 2023.

In the electric car sector, thanks again to the incentives, BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles) grew by 29%, reaching a market share of 5.2%, with an increase of 1.5 percentage points compared to August and of 1 .6 pp compared to September 2023. PHEVs (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles) remained essentially stable at 3.4% (-0.1 pp on August and -0.6 pp on September 2023), bringing the total share of ECVs at 8.6% (+1.0 pp compared to September 2023).

The ranking of the best-selling cars in September 2024 saw the Fiat Panda in first place with 7,030 registrations, followed by the Dacia Sandero (4,131) and the Jeep Avenger (3,959).

Sales of diesel, petrol, LPG, hybrid and electric cars
Among fuel sources, in September cars with petrol engines lost 3.9 points, stopping at 25.4% share, while cumulatively they reached 29.4% (+1.2 pp). Diesel fell to 12.7% in the month (-2.8 pp) and to 14.1% in the 9 months (-4.6 pp). LPG gained 1.3 points, rising to 9.3% in the month and to 9.4% in the cumulative (+0.5 pp). CNG registered just 9 cars in the month, covering 0.1% in the 9 months.

Hybrid cars rose to 43.9% share in the month (+4.4 pp) and to 39.6% in the cumulative (+3.9 pp), with 13.9% for “full” hybrids and 30.0% for “mild” hybrids. As anticipated, BEV cars grew by 29% in September, gaining 1.6 points and positioning themselves at 5.2% of the total (4.0% in January-September), while PHEVs stopped at 3.4% (-0.6 pp and 3.3% in the 9 months).
Who sold the most in September
In September 2024, Fiat finished in third place in the Italian car market, behind Volkswagen and Toyota. The Turin company suffered a significant drop of 43.74%, taking it to a market share of 7.46%. Volkswagen, with 9,742 registrations, recorded a -3.83%, reaching a market share of 8.02%. Toyota follows closely behind with 9,704 units sold and a decline of 5.95%, maintaining a market share of 7.98%.

In fourth place was Renault, which achieved growth of 14.15%, reaching 6.27% market share. Dacia, which recorded an increase of 18.44%, had the same market share as Renault. In the ranking of the top ten car manufacturers, Peugeot (-2.06%), BMW (+26.08%), Ford (-14.40%), Jeep (-8.20%) and Audi (-4) closed. ,13%).
Other manufacturers such as Suzuki and MG showed signs of growth, with 3,612 (+1.72%) and 3,230 registrations (+12.27%) respectively. In contrast, Mazda and Honda recorded declines, with Mazda at -9.01% and Honda at -28.35%. The DR group saw an increase of 26.72% with 2,196 registrations, dominated by the DR brand with 1,687 cars sold.

In the premium segment, Volvo recorded 1,605 new registrations, driven by the compact electric EX30, with growth of 21.87% compared to the previous year. On the contrary, the Jaguar Land Rover group lost 47.75% with 754 new license plates, while Porsche suffered a decline of 12.55% with 606 registrations. Finally, Tesla marked a notable increase in deliveries, with 1,949 registrations and a growth of 115.12% compared to September 2023. Also noteworthy are the 414 registrations of the Chinese brand Omoda in the month of its debut in Italy.
