Beijing, 1 October 2024 – Jannik Sinner in the final of the Beijing 2024 ATP tournament. The world number 1, holder of the title, today in the semi-final beats the Chinese Yunchaokete Bu, number 96 in the ranking, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) in 2h05′.
Tomorrow Sinner will face the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, seeded number 2, who in the first semi-final defeated the Russian Daniil Medvedev, seeded number 3, 7-5, 6-3. Sinner is looking for his seventh title of the season and the 17th of his career in an extraordinary 2024 on the field.
The 23ebbe from South Tyrol is preparing to face Alcaraz for the tenth time in his career. The Spaniard leads 5-4 in direct matches with Sinner and has won the last two direct matches staged this year: he won in 3 sets in the semi-final of the Masters 1000 in Indian Wells and conceded an encore by winning in 5 sets in the semi-final of Roland Garros: in both cases, the Iberian ended up winning the tournament.
Sinner’s last victory dates back to last year, in Beijing: the Italian won in 2 sets in the semi-final and then defeated Medvedev in the final to win the title.
Sinner tries to exploit the understandable nervousness of his opponent, protagonist for the first time on such a prestigious stage. Bu faces and erases 2 break points in his first serve, loosens up and enters the match.
In the fifth game it is Sinner who has to cancel 3 break points which risk complicating the blue’s day: the world number 1 gets by and changes gear. In the next game he scores the break (4-2) and after wasting 2 set points at 5-3 he closes the first half 6-3 in 54 minutes.
Bu has the merit of staying in the match at the start of the second set (2-2) without conceding anything in the first 2 rounds of service. In the fifth game the Chinese faced a very heavy break point and remained afloat (3-2). The script repeats itself in the seventh game, Bu erases another break point and remains ahead in the score (4-3) in a set that reaches a tie-break. Sinner, as often happens in overtime, raises the pace to unsustainable levels for the opponent in question: 2-0, 4-1, 5-1 and closure 7-3. Sinner in the final against Alcaraz.
“It was a tough match, I didn’t know him very much and at the beginning I didn’t know what to expect. In the first set I played good tennis, in the second I lost intensity, but I had opportunities that I didn’t take advantage of. Mentally I stayed in the match and played a good tiebreak.” says Sinner at the end of the match.
“I’m happy to return to the final in Beijing, it will be a tough challenge against Alcaraz, every match is different. I’m enjoying the fact that I’m still in the final, I hope tomorrow will be a good match.” conclude.
