In the catalogue of Netflix We can find films of all kinds and a good handful of them dedicated to all those science fiction lovers. Although this genre is very broad and can cover everything, there are some feature films that are worth watching for the impact they cause on a plot and visual level, with Annihilation being one of the best examples we can find.
Based on the novel of the same name by Jeff VanderMeer, this adaptation was directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina) and takes place in a time when the Earth has been hit by a meteorite that has collided with a lighthouse. However, instead of destroying it, it generates a strange phenomenon that ends up being known as the Shiningswallowing everything in its path, creating mutations and other anomalies as it grows ever larger.
With humanity’s fear of it becoming ever larger, different research groups will decide to enter this place, but none of them manage to escape alive except Kane (Oscar Isaac), a military soldier and husband of Lena (Natalie Portman), the protagonist. The latter, as an expert in biology, will decide delve into this mysterious area in the company of other scientists in order to find out what happened.
This leaves us with a science fiction thriller and moments of terror, with a fascinating setting because of how the environments have been altered by the Shining, achieving an atmosphere that captures you visually. The script becomes very interesting because of the desire it generates to discover what exactly is happening, something that is supported by a series of flashbacks y flashforwards from Lena’s own life.
The plot has certain overwhelming moments and one that blows your mind, especially in the final stretch, with brilliant acting by the entire cast, especially the group of scientists and how their moods will change the more time they spend inside this unusual area.
