For a car of this size, the Volkswagen ID.7 is remarkably inconspicuous. Since the brand introduced it last year, we’ve barely spotted it in the wild – perhaps because only a handful have been sold in the Netherlands, or perhaps because it just doesn’t really stand out.
By throwing a few new versions of the ID.7 at it, VW now expects to boost the numbers and turn the tide. Among those new versions is also a station wagon with a hot label, the Volkswagen ID.7 GTX Tourer. And you know: we’re a hit with something like that.

What’s new about this Volkswagen ID.7 GTX Tourer?
First, a few words about the updates to the ID.7 range in general. VW is introducing both the Pro S and GTX versions; the first with a larger battery and corresponding range, the second with an additional engine. That range is enough to make the seasoned-asphalt-eater-who-has-to-drive-electric pay attention. Because in the WLTP fairytale scenario, an ID.7 Pro S can reach no less than 709 kilometers on a single charge. Even if that turns out to be around 600 kilometers in the real world under good conditions: that’s still enough to get you home. And if you don’t manage that, you can quickly continue with a fast charging speed of 200 kW.

More interesting for big kids like us is the less rational, less efficient, faster Volkswagen ID.7 GTX. But interesting for everyone, because more versatile and above all (subjective observation) much more beautiful, is the long-awaited Tourer. Combine those two and you get what we have here. Electric Volkswagen driving does not get any better than this for the time being.
How does it drive?
Every ID.7 is quiet and comfortable, stable and solid, but you choose the GTX because you also want to sprint now and then. It does that from 0 to 100 in 5.5 seconds, which in a world of 1,000-horsepower Teslas is not remarkable, but of course faster than you need 99.9 percent of the time. The GTX brings a second electric motor that drives the front wheels and is partly responsible for a combined output of 340 horsepower.
The power comes on appropriately abruptly, and in Sport mode there is a modest humming sound when driving away. The steering is on the heavy side; VW apparently felt that they had to make the promised dynamics tangible under all circumstances. While the firm chassis controls the mass, the Alcantara seats with high bolsters keep you effectively in place.
What is the interior of the Volkswagen ID.7 GTX Tourer like?
The interior of the Volkswagen ID.7 GTX Tourer, like all ID.7s, looks empty and spacious. There are hardly any buttons – almost everything happens on the huge 15-inch screen. Volkswagen has equipped it with version 5.0 of their software, complete with ChatGPT, games, wellness apps and something called Connected Travel Assist, which harvests traffic data from other VWs around you.

The system works well and we are fans of the small second screen that permanently shows the most important information. A head-up display is standard and the navigation is partly expressed in the moving light bar under your windshield. Sounds stroboscopic, but it happens subtly. Some interior details (see the perforated seats) reveal that you are dealing with the flagship, but the GTX remains quite reserved in this.
What are the biggest pros and cons?
The Tourer naturally offers the same generous freedom of movement on the back seat as the regular ID.7, but adds a deep, 605-litre luggage compartment. This space is easy to use, with a two-stage roller blind and a shallow compartment under the floor to store your charging cable out of sight. Enough reason to pay that extra 1,000 euros for a Tourer, if the beautiful appearance wasn’t already.
Underneath the skin, Volkswagen has sharpened the five-link rear axle, the adaptive dampers and the steering, and unleashed a number of electronic tricks: a whole bunch of helpers come together under the name Vehicle Dynamics Manager and ensure, among other things, that the power balance in bends remains on the rear wheels, so that you can still experience something with your family boat in between the school run and the grocery run.
Less pleasant is that we repeatedly headbutted the A-pillar when getting in. It must be our fault. Furthermore, the price is quite steep compared to other versions, but that should come as no surprise.
What is the price of the Volkswagen ID.7 GTX Tourer?
In the Netherlands, you have an ID.7 from 57,990 euros and an ID.7 Tourer from 58,990 euros. In Belgium, those prices are 60,165 and 61,165 euros. The price of our Volkswagen ID.7 GTX Tourer is 68,990 euros in the Netherlands and 72,365 euros in Belgium. There is also an (even) more fully equipped GTX Business for 71,490 euros in the Netherlands and 74,965 euros in Belgium.

So, should you buy the Volkswagen ID.7 GTX Tourer?
The ID.7 sticks with us as a delicious long-distance machine that, in GTX form, gives you a nice amount of power without beating you up. Add to that the Tourer bodywork and you have a seriously versatile and talented EV. And the best part is: if you do it smartly, you still don’t stand out. Hooray for sleepers.
