The greatest icon of FC Bayern Munich of all time is getting the recognition he deserves. From January 2025, the record champions will play their home games in the Allianz Arena on Franz-Beckenbauer-Platz 5 deliver.
From January 7, 2025, the first anniversary of the Kaiser’s death, the square in front of the stadium will bear Beckenbauer’s name. “The stadium will in future bear the address Franz-Beckenbauer-Platz 5,” the city of Munich officially announced on Thursday. Until then, the current address will remain Werner-Heisenberg-Allee 25.
The municipal committee of the city council explained that the renaming was intended to honor “the exceptional sporting achievements of Franz Beckenbauer.” Beckenbauer wore the number five shirt for FC Bayern and the German national team.
“He is one of the greatest athletes our city has ever produced. With his sporting successes and his commitment to football, he has left a lasting mark on Germany’s sporting landscape. His calm, humorous manner and his way of expressing himself will forever remain part of the Munich attitude to life,” said Munich’s mayor Dieter Reiter to the dpa.
“Naming a street is the highest honor that the city of Munich can bestow posthumously and a sign of the deep respect and appreciation that we have for Franz Beckenbauer,” explained Reiter.
“Kaiser” Beckenbauer passed away on January 7, 2024 at the age of 78. The Giesinger native was buried in Munich.
