In the absence of the injured Serhou Guirassy and in view of the fact that new signing Maximilian Beier needed time to get used to his new position immediately after his move to BVB, head coach Nuri Sahin played the first two competitive games of the season without a real centre forward in the starting eleven. Beier played against Werder Bremen, and Guirassy played against 1. FC Heidenheim. Now Sahin is returning to his system without a number nine.
Both Beier and Guirassy are on the bench for BVB’s Champions League opener against Club Brugge. Especially after Guirassy’s strong debut in the starting eleven, the new signing from VfB Stuttgart was expected to be in the first eleven again. However, since the Guinean has only just returned from injury, BVB may limit his minutes to avoid the risk of a relapse.
Substitute Maxi Beier, on the other hand, has not been convincing in his previous appearances and still feels a little alien in and with BVB’s game. Coach Sahin may therefore leave the German international on the bench against Bruges.
Donyell Malen, Karim Adeyemi and Julian Brandt will start in the BVB offensive on Wednesday evening. Adeyemi is expected to be in the striker position; the lightning-fast attacker has recently shown himself to be in goal-scoring form and has already played the role of number nine under Sahin.
Kick-off for the match in Bruges is at 9 p.m. BVB will play with this starting line-up:
Kobel – Bensebaini, Schlotterbeck, Süle, Ryerson – Can, Gross, Sabitzer – Brandt, Adeyemi, Malen
