We already know what James Cameron’s next film will be after he finishes the Avatar franchise
James Cameron is one of the best directors of all time

Cameron has been confirmed to direct at least three more Avatar schools, including the upcoming Avatar: Fire and Ash. But at the same time, the director is preparing his next project for when he’s finally finished with the Avatar saga: Last Train from Hiroshima. This would be Cameron’s first non-Avatar film since he made Titanic in 1995.
Cameron has certainly characterized his directing career with action-packed sci-fi epics like Aliens, Terminator, and of course, the Avatar films. But after he finishes the Avatar franchise, we’ll be looking at a more Titanic-like film: a historical drama based on a real-life tragedy.
The director has confessed that this is a subject he has wanted to make a film about for years, and that he has “been struggling to find a way to do it.”
What is The Last Train from Hiroshima about?
Based on Charles Pellegrino’s 2015 book of the same name, it will tell the most incredible eyewitness account of the 1945 atomic bombings of Japan. The film tells the true story of Tsutomu Yamaguchi, who survived the bombing of Hiroshima, boarded a train to Nagasaki, and then survived the next nuclear bomb there as well.
Yamaguchi is the only person officially recognized by the Japanese government as a survivor of both explosions. And director James Cameron managed to meet Yamaguchi in the hospital a few days before he died and “handed him the baton of his personal story” to turn into a film.
So, Last Train from Hiroshima seems like the perfect companion film to Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster Oppenheimer (2023), which focused on the perspective of the physicists working on the Manhattan Project. Now, Last Train to Hiroshima will show something similar but from the Japanese perspective.
Why is this new movie so exciting?
The true story behind Last Train from Hiroshima alone makes for a particularly exciting plot, but the fact that Cameron is working on a new film outside of the Avatar franchise is undoubtedly the icing on the cake. After 15 years of Avatar sequels, it seemed unlikely that Cameron would step away from Pandora, but the chance to see this legend make a new film separate from the franchise makes the interest even stronger.
Of course, this doesn’t mean that the first two Avatar films, both the original and The Way of Water, aren’t masterpieces. Avatar is an unrivaled franchise, especially for fans of science fiction and alien worlds. But we must also add the idea that they have managed to convey moving messages about the environment.
However, after so many “repeat” visits, the excitement is bound to wear off a bit, so the idea that Cameron dares to do something completely new and far from what we’ve seen over the past two decades fills his fans with excitement. But, once again, it’s worth noting that Avatar is great, but, after five or even seven films expected for the franchise, this whole story could become a bit unnecessary and, perhaps at some point, the same thing that prevents Quentin Tarantino from seeing Toy Story 4 happens, and one of the Avatar movies has a great ending that makes it not “necessary” to see the next one.
But either way, Last Train from Hiroshima looks to be a promising project, especially for Cameron’s future career, although we shouldn’t expect it to happen anytime soon since the director won’t get around to making the film until he gets a break from Avatar’s relentless production schedule, as these are productions that take a long time to make, so keep in mind that Avatar 5 isn’t scheduled to be released until December 19, 2031, and that’s not taking into account any delays between now and then.
