September 17, 2024 – Filippo Turetta, in prison on charges of killing his ex-girlfriend Giulia Cecchettin, will not be in court at the first hearing of the trial, scheduled for Monday, September 23, before the judges of the Assize Court of Venice. This was announced by his lawyer, Giovanni Caruso, who reiterated the defense’s intention not to request a psychiatric evaluation for the 22-year-old student who risks life imprisonment. The evaluation could, however, be imposed directly by the judges.
The young man from Torreglia is accused of voluntary homicide aggravated by premeditationcruelty, brutality, stalking and concealment of a corpse.
Turetta’s confession
In the long report of the interrogation before the public prosecutor of Venice Andrea Petroni, Turetta reconstructed the relationship with his university friend, the arguments that ended on two occasions with her pulling him “to vent her anger”, Giulia’s relationships with friends from whom “I didn’t want to feel excluded”, emotional blackmail (“I feel too bad because we broke up, I can’t do anything, it would make me feel better, it would help me to see each other”, he told her), his protective sister Elena who “felt from the beginning that I didn’t like her”. For a long time he appears incapable of accepting the end of a relationship“the thing that mattered most of all was hearing her and writing with her or seeing her and so the fact that she wrote less or wanted to erase the relationships a little made me feel very bad, that is, very sad”. A revelation that he also makes to a psychologist.
The story of November 11, 2023 is that of a normal day, when before sinking the knife – the autopsy will say 75 times – “nothing happened”. The tour of the Marghera shopping center, the dinner together, then the first attack in the parking lot 150 meters from Giulia’s house. The graduate has clear ideas about her future without Filippo. She refuses his last gifts, including a stuffed animal and an illustrated book. “I screamed at her that it wasn’t right, that it shouldn’t be like this, that I needed her so badly, that I needed our relationship, that she shouldn’t want to erase me or anything else, that she shouldn’t want to eliminate our relationship because I would… I also thought about… I was sick, I thought about committing suicide and that she, well, instead had to… she had to continue with our relationship… she promised me that she would never get back together with me no matter what”. She replied firmly that she wouldn’t get back together with me. She got out of the carshouting ‘You’re crazy, fuck you, leave me alone’,” the twenty-two-year-old told the prosecutor.
“I was very angry. Before I went out tooI took a knife from the back pocket of the driver’s seat. I ran after her, grabbed her arm, holding the knife in my right hand. In the parking lot in Vigonovo, the student gets out of the car and he stops her, he “blindly” stabs her with a first stab. She screamed ‘help’ and fell. Then I grabbed her shoulders while she was on the ground. She resisted. She hit her head”.
Stunned by the fall, he loads her into the car, onto the back seat, away from the bag with the cell phone that remains in front. “I didn’t know where to go” then he heads towards the industrial area of Fossò, while Giulia tries to react but the second escape attempt turns deadly. “While we were in the car she started telling me ‘what are you doing? Are you crazy? Let me go’. She was lying on the seat, then she sat up. She was touching her head. At first I was only thinking about driving. Then I started to tug at her and hold her down with one arm.. We stopped in the middle of the road, I tried to put tape on her mouth, I don’t remember if she took it off or if it fell off by itself because I hadn’t put it on properly. She was struggling. She got out and started running. I got out too.” An attempt to save herself, filmed, in part, by a company camera (it focuses on Giulia at 11:40 pm) that precedes the final act.
“I had two knives in my pocket in the car behind the driver’s seat. The I gave, I don’t know, ten, twelve, thirteen blows with the knife. I hit a bit of everything, the arms, the neck, the face, the chest, the nape of the neck” he says miming in front of the public prosecutor the hand gesture“.
The last stab wound was to the eye: “I stopped immediately, I didn’t want to hit her in certain places” and he added: “Partly because I couldn’t take it much longer, partly because I realised I had stabbed her in the eye and it made me feel too sick and so I stopped”. Autopsy reveals 75 stab wounds and death from hemorrhagic shock caused by the blow to the head and the stab wounds.
Turetta does not speak of a sudden fit or a blackout, but he does not remember some details and confesses that he did not have an escape plan.. He says he got rid of the blood-stained clothes, the knife and the cell phone of the twenty-two-year-old along the way to gain time, and headed towards the mountains with two goals: to hide Giulia and to commit suicide. An attempt that failed at least a couple of times because “I never had the courage” then the vision of the parents’ appeal on TV and then the ‘surrender’ with the arrest near Leipzig, in Germany, seven days after the murder of Giulia Cecchettin.
