There are just a few days left until one of the most anticipated productions by fans of the Dark Knight arrives on HBO Max: The Penguin. This spin-off series from the acclaimed film starring Robert Pattinson is shaping up to be one of the platform’s big hits this year. However, some viewers are concerned because they think they need to watch The Batman first to fully understand the series.
Well, to clarify this issue, the director of The BatmanMatt Reeves spoke to US outlet Collider. In the interview, Reeves explained that it is not mandatory to have seen the 2022 film to enjoy the series, although he admits that those who do will have a richer experience.
“Here’s the thing: I think in terms of it being like an epic crime saga, it’s something that is deepened by watching the whole thing. But the truth is, each one, of course, has to live on its own. So The Batman lives on its own. The Penguin series lives on its own. The Batman 2 will live on its own, but it will be deepened by your experience. You don’t have to be prepared for whatever happens. You’ll just understand that that’s the entry point for this character and that the events that unfold do so in a way that’s not like, oh, gee, I needed to watch those eight episodes of that show or I’m not going to understand what’s going on. That’s not really how it works.”
As Reeves comments, the franchise The Batman It’s not like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where you have to watch a huge number of productions to understand where the main story is going, but rather each product released in the saga is more or less independent.
Likewise, it is much more enjoyable to see everything as a whole, since you do not miss a single detail and you are more aware of the context in which each character lives. The series of The Penguin will arrive exclusively on Max on September 19, 2024.
