A fourth death was found in Austria last night as a result of the high water in Central Europe, bringing the total death toll to eighteen.
In Poland, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary and Romania, people are also afraid that more people will be found dead. The floods and water damage are not over yet.
The fourth fatality in Austria was a man in his forties, a police spokesman told Kronen Zeitung. He was found in Klosterneuburg, in the hard-hit state of Lower Austria.
Damaged dam
In the east of the country, a dam is expected to break. It has been badly damaged by the flooding. People near the town of Rust im Tullnerfeld were evacuated for this reason last night.
From the Czech Republic, which is also flooded, the river water is flowing to the German city of Dresden. The German authorities expect the water level to exceed six meters during the day. In Dresden, Germany, the water level of the Elbe River is already four times higher than the normal level of 1.42 meters.
During the severe floods of 2002, the water level in the region rose to 9.40 metres.
The centre of the small Polish town of Klodzko looks like a bomb has exploded in the aftermath of the floods, according to the dpg news agency. The river has also burst its banks there. This has caused windows and doors of shops to be blown off. In addition, loose cables and planks are lying everywhere.
The city is located about a hundred kilometers south of the capital Wroclaw.
Romania
In Romania, seven people were killed by the storm. In the Czech Republic, where three people died, the army was deployed to help residents of flooded areas.
