In 1982, Blade Runner was released, one of the films that has served as inspiration for many works that we all know, from the video game Cyberpunk 2077 to series such as Cyberpunk: Edgerrunners and Altered CarbonIn fact, CD Projekt left several references to Ridley Scott’s film. And yes, one of them was the iconic “tears in the rain” scene.
We don’t have to go that far. The movie itself had its own secrets and mysteries. The three origami figures played a big role in creating one of the most fun and interesting theories: is Rick Deckard, the protagonist played by Harrison Ford, human or a replicant? It would be ironic because he is a replicant hunter. Fallout 4 pays homage to this theory with the Synth.
Gaff, played by Edward James Olmos, makes three figures: a chicken, a man and a unicorn, and they all have to do with Deckard. Theories suggest that the first two symbolize cowardice and his attraction to Rachel, respectively. The last one is a bit more complex.
Deckard dreams at one point of a unicorn running through the mist of a forest. The origami unicorn appears as he and Rachel escape. Many fans point out that the unicorn represents Rachel herself due to her special condition. The question is: where does this timely coincidence come from?
This question has fueled the theory for years that Eldon Tyrell not only implanted false memories in replicants, but also dreams to make them more human and to some extent control their destiny, as indicated in Medium. Unfortunately, Blade Runner 2049 did not offer a clear answer to this mystery. There is no doubt that Blade Runner plays exceptionally with the limits of the human condition.
