“Commitment to guarantee the right to health and decent conditions”
Rome, 13 September 2024 – “I visited the female section of Rebibbia prison to continue atsee first-hand the reality in which penitentiary police officers and local health personnel operate of competence, as well as to check on the conditions of the prisoners. I have had long discussions with the director Nadia Fontana, the commander of the Penitentiary Police Carlo Olmi, the commissioner of the ASL Roma 2, Francesco Amato and the vice president of the Regional Council, Pino Cangemi, to intervene in the most effective way possible”. This was declared by the president of the Lazio Region, Francis Rock, at the end of the visit to the Rebibbia women’s prison.
“I found a passionate staff capable of going beyond objective difficulties. I spoke with some inmates and visited the nursery where, at the moment, two children are being hosted together with their mothers.. The condition of suffering, lack of staff and overcrowding in prisons, both at regional and national level, is known to all. Our duty, as a Region, is to intervene on health aspects, because the detention condition must not violate the constitutional right to health and health workers must be able to work in environments that are as serene and dignified as possible”, concluded President Francesco Rocca.
