It was obvious that Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 would appeal to veterans and new recruits alike. Many of the latter (myself included) have immersed themselves in the game and now have more questions than answers. And that’s a bummer because they’ve stumbled into a universe whose lore is almost 40 years old.
Veterans are taking advantage of this fever for Warhammer 40k to answer many questions on social media. This is one of the more curious questions. Some new players have wondered why the Empire has mutilated, winged babies roaming around the facility. It may be really murky to the uninitiated eye, but it’s not even close to the strangest thing in this universe.
Don’t worry. They are not babies who have undergone operations to mutilate them and add mechanical limbs and wings. Their official name is Cherubim or Servitors. They are automatons or constructs created from servoskulls, which are drones created in the shape of human skulls. In this case, bionic components and synthetic human parts are added to give them the shape of babies or children.
In Space Marine 2, I really respect the fact that Cherubs are one of the first things you see on the barge. It’s a good starting point for those who don’t really know what to expect. – Warhammer Fan on Twitter
Don’t worry, most of them aren’t actually lobotomized babies, most are built from scratch as flesh-eating automatons with computers for brains and simply made to look like babies for ceremonial purposes.
And why the hell is the Cherubim in the form of a baby? The Adeptus Mechanicus and Adeptus Ministorum of the Imperium give this form to Cherubim in an attempt to symbolize purity and to perform ceremonial rites. According to the wiki, there are also Cherubim Armorium, which are responsible for transmitting precision data and providing ammunition to the Space Marines.
