If you want a sci-fi movie about survival and terror on Mars, here is a great recommendation.
The 2013 science fiction film The Last Days on Mars, directed by Ruairí Robinson, immerses us in an intense horror adventure set on the inhospitable red planet. In the year 2040, a team of astronauts faces a series of events during the final hours of their mission on Mars, where a scientific discovery turns into an apocalyptic nightmare.
Attention SPOILERS. The sci-fi film begins as the mission on Mars seems to be routinely coming to an end. After six months of collecting geological samples, the crew of the Tantalus base awaits their return to Earth. With the Aurora ship on its way to pick them up in 19 hours, the astronauts seem to be safe. However, the tranquility is interrupted when one of the scientists, Marco Petrovic (Goran Kostic), disobeys the orders of Captain Charles Brunel (Elias Koteas) and returns to the excavation site in search of more than just rock samples.
Marco has been hiding a disturbing discovery: he has found traces of microscopic life in Martian rocks, a discovery he is not willing to share until he is sure of the find. But as he investigates further, an accident traps him underground and everything takes an unexpected turn.
What seemed to be a scientific achievement soon turns into an unimaginable horror.
As the team attempts to rescue Marco, it is discovered that the Martian soil hides something more dangerous than just bacteria: a microorganism that turns humans into violent, almost zombie-like creatures. When Marco is pulled from the depths of the pit, his seemingly dead body quickly reanimates and brutally attacks his crewmates.
From that moment on, things quickly spiral out of control in this sci-fi film. Marco and other crew members, infected by this alien bacteria, transform into monstrous creatures that seek to annihilate the survivors. The base, once a safe haven, becomes a death trap. Kim Aldrich (Olivia Williams), the scientist who discovered the microorganism, also faces the creatures while desperation and chaos take over the crew.
The struggle to survive.
With the astronauts turning into infection-driven killers, the remaining survivors – Vincent Campbell (Liev Schreiber), Rebecca Lane (Romola Garai) and Robert Irwin (Johnny Harris) – are left to make desperate choices. Locked in the base, they try to find a solution as communications fail and rescue seems increasingly remote.
Rebecca discovers that antibiotics can slow the spread of the microorganism, but they don’t stop it completely. As the infected hunt down the survivors, Vincent risks his life to try to repair the communications system. However, danger lurks around every corner and the feeling of hopelessness grows as the Aurora rescue team approaches, not knowing what awaits them on the surface of Mars.
The final sacrifice.
The sci-fi film culminates in a tension-packed climax as the last survivors try to reach the landing zone before it’s too late. The infection has claimed more victims, and the creatures seem unstoppable. In a heartbreaking twist, Rebecca, realizing she is infected, sacrifices herself to avoid becoming a threat to Vincent. Eventually, Vincent, physically and mentally exhausted, meets his fate when the rescue ship lands on Mars, only to be attacked by the creatures.
The Last Days on Mars is a sci-fi survival film that perfectly combines the zombie and space genres. It also shows us the unknown dangers of space exploration, not only on a physical level, but also psychologically, while raising the terrifying possibility that life on another planet may be more lethal than we imagine. It is available on Filmin.
