Formia, September 11, 2024 – A signature destined to represent a turning point for the city of Formia. An important memorandum of understanding was signed by the mayor Gianluca Taddeo and the Director of the Department of Strategies and Planning for Infrastructure Development of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, Christian Colaneri. An almost historic moment, because this document will start a process that will lead to a general redevelopment of the Formia railway station, resolving mobility issues that for years have created inconveniences for the numerous commuters and students, as well as livability for residents in the area surrounding the station.
The administration led by Mayor Gianluca Taddeo, in fact, has had the station’s arrangement as its objective since its inauguration and started from the analysis of the critical issues to devise an intervention plan. Three major project ideas that they would like to implement: the culverting of the railway section in the Castellone area, recovering a 100-meter long space where parking will be built; a direct pedestrian connection between Via Cassio and the station through the construction of an elevator that will allow citizens to access the station earlier; finally, a connection between Via Solaro, Via A. Caravalle and Via Madonna di Ponza, with the widening of the underpass of Via Solaro.
An alternative artery – the latter – that will bypass the city center and is aimed at alleviating the traffic problems that the city suffers from. These ambitious projects of the municipal administration have been brought to the attention of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, which has launched a program of redevelopment of the main railway stations and of strategic importance from a transport and tourism point of view, including the Formia-Gaeta railway station, across the entire national network. And this morning, engineer Christian Colaneri arrived in the Security Room of the municipal building to sign, together with the mayor Taddeo, the memorandum of understanding that gives the green light to the implementation of the project proposals of the Municipality. In fact, an ad hoc working group has been formed that will have to draft the executive projects with the commitment to provide indications on technical and economic details within 12 months, preparatory to the request for financing.
“This protocol had been requested for years,” commented Mayor Taddeo, “and no one had followed up on it. We finally succeeded and this morning we started a collaboration with RFI that will lead us to implement a development process that will give new opportunities to the city. It is not easy to achieve, but starting and completing it is a big challenge. I am convinced that we will be able to win this one too, just as happened with the “Passeggiata di Cicerone,” the construction site for which was opened a few days ago. I would like to thank Rete Ferroviaria Italiana for taking our project ideas into consideration, specifically RFI CEO Gianpiero Strisciuglio, who unfortunately was unable to be present this morning due to other commitments, but who called me on the phone to say hello to everyone and to engineer Colaneri who signed the important document. I would also like to thank the person who was my interlocutor in this process, namely engineer Clemente Carta, supported by councilor Antonio Miele.”
“With this memorandum of understanding – added engineer Christian Colaneri – we are activating a working group that will deal with the design of the interventions promoted by the Municipality. These are interventions that have an impact not only on the city, but also on our station. The strategic plan, the vision of the Municipality has convinced us, because the promoted interventions not only resolve a series of problems that concern the city, but improve accessibility to the railway system that will create the conditions to increase the influx of passengers within the railway system”.
