Jan Paul van Hecke made his debut for the Dutch national team in the Nations League match against Germany. The 24-year-old Brighton & Hove Albion defender came on for Matthijs de Ligt at the start of the second half.
Van Hecke is the 28th player to make his debut for the Dutch national team under national coach Ronald Koeman. Joshua Zirkzee was the 27th in the quarter finals of the European Championship against Turkey. Van Hecke is the first Zeelander in the Dutch national team since Peter van Vossen in 2000.
Koeman was previously the national coach of Oranje from early 2018 to mid-2020. Hans Hateboer was the first to make his debut under his leadership on 23 March 2018. During that period, Wout Weghorst, Frenkie de Jong, Denzel Dumfries and Donyell Malen, among others, followed.
In his second period as national coach, Koeman gave players such as Lutsharel Geertruida, Joey Veerman, Tijjani Reijnders, Bart Verbruggen and Jeremie Frimpong their debuts.
