Theaters Diligentia and PePijn and arts education institution KOO seem to be saved for the coming years thanks to an additional amount of 5 million euros set aside by The Hague. Earlier, the advice was given not to grant subsidies to these institutions. The board of mayor and aldermen is therefore not fully adopting that advice, it announced on Tuesday.
“The addition of these extra resources ensures that all institutions with a positive recommendation will still receive a subsidy,” says alderman for Culture Saskia Bruines. “Theatres Diligentia and PePijn and art education institution KOO fulfil a valuable role in the cultural landscape of The Hague. However, the institutions themselves also have a responsibility to write a good application and to have their business operations in order. With this money, they can be awarded a subsidy for 2025 and 2026 and we can discuss the future.”
The total pot of 70 million in cultural subsidies is distributed once every four years and previously it seemed that the three institutions mentioned would not qualify for this. An advisory committee indicated that the two theaters lacked a “recognizable signature” and accused them of not having an artistic-content vision. “Yes! Our doors remain open”, the theaters responded Tuesday evening to the proposed allocation. Officially, the Hague city council still has to approve the plan.
