The late actor James Earl Jones gave “a voice to some of the greatest characters in film history,” according to Disney CEO Bob Iger. James Earl Jones was both “the kindly Mufasa and the menacing Darth Vader,” Iger wrote in a statement. With his voice, he also “left an indelible impression on generations,” according to the Disney CEO.
On Monday evening it was announced that actor James Earl Jones, known as the voice of the Star Wars series and The Lion King, has died at the age of 93. The “celebrated actor” appeared in some two hundred films, Iger wrote in his statement. “On behalf of everyone at Disney, we extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”
“Voicing an animated film is acting at its purest,” Jones said of his portrayal of Musafa in The Lion King (1994), according to Iger. “It’s kind of like ancient Greek theater where the actors wore masks. In our case, the masks are the animations. All the behaviors, emotions, feelings behind that mask come from us.”
Other actors and, among others, the channel CNN, to which James Earl Jones lent his voice, also reacted to the news of his death.
