After the European Championship, Leroy Sané underwent groin surgery. The 28-year-old’s long-standing problems are said to have finally been resolved. Sané is currently working on his comeback; the winger was unable to play for FC Bayern or the national team at the start of the season.
For Sané, the coming months will be crucial for the further course of his career. Not only because he finally wants to be able to deliver consistently again. But above all because his contract with the German record champions expires in the summer of 2025. There have been rumors and speculation about Sané’s future for a long time. Back in March, Sané indicated during the friendly match between Germany and the Netherlands that he was open to a contract extension.
However, the discussions on this do not seem to have been really intensive yet. There is still no sign of a quick decision. And it cannot be expected in the coming weeks. As the Sports picture reported that Sané initially wants to concentrate fully on his comeback and find his top form again. He has been struggling to achieve this for months. After a good start to the 23/24 season, Sané’s performance continued to deteriorate. Also because he was struggling with constant physical problems.
Bayern officials should therefore show understanding for Sané’s attitude. Sports director Max Eberl explained to the Sports picture: “As for Leroy, we first have to make sure that he is back on the pitch fully healthy as soon as possible. That is what we are concentrating on at the moment. We are looking forward to it because Leroy, with his enormous qualities, can make the difference at any moment on the pitch.”
Eberl also doesn’t seem to feel under pressure when it comes to extending his contract. “He’s entering the last year of his contract, so we’ll talk calmly about his future in the coming months. We all know that he’s a factor in winning titles,” said Eberl.
The FCB sports director will presumably also try to reduce Sané’s salary. The 28-year-old is currently said to be one of the top earners with an annual salary of around 20 million euros. Eberl’s task at Bayern, however, is to reduce salary costs. According to Sané, Sports picture but two arguments on his side: Even if another club offers him a lower salary, he would receive a signing bonus because he will be free next summer. In addition, Sané still has a lot of credit with the bosses. When he came from Manchester City in 2020, a salary that would have brought him five million euros more per year was said to have already been negotiated. However, Bayern asked him to accept a lower salary because of the corona crisis.
Even if Sané is fundamentally open to a new Bayern contract because he feels comfortable in Munich, the extension will certainly not be a sure thing. One or two top European clubs are likely to be lurking with the prospect of a free transfer.
