Gaeta, September 9, 2024 – The end of summer is upon us and it is already time for the first assessments. Mayor Cristian Leccese goes into the matter and, in expressing satisfaction with the progress of the summer season, highlights how “In the months of May and June there was a good tourist turnout, while in July there was a decline in attendance. The same goes for August, a decline shared with other colleagues and therefore municipalities on our Riviera.
In the face of this, as confirmed by operators in the sector, there is an increase in foreign tourists. In part, all this is due to what I am starting to call “globalization of the effect on tourism”, that is to say an important offer that also comes from the new emerging countries of the Mediterranean, such as Albania, Montenegro, Croatia already chosen as a destination for a decade. And then without forgetting an evident difficulty of Italians, who when faced with spending on vacation make new evaluations: gasoline, mortgage, the effects of inflation are heavy burdens on the family budget and the current summer is recording heavy drops for the entire national seaside offer. A national picture that also has repercussions on our Riviera. However, despite the decline, we are holding up thanks to an organization of hospitality that is always competitive and the many events that characterize the territory”.
“However, as far as we are concerned – continues Mayor Leccese – we have very positive data relating to cultural tourism with the scheduled openings of many historical sites, including monuments and churches, thanks to the “Gaeta city of culture” project, the systematization for the total valorization and promotion of the very rich artistic, naturalistic and cultural heritage that the city has, with the collaboration of institutional bodies and the third sector”.
“And the one that is now coming to an end – concludes the mayor – has been a brilliant summer also for a series of important artistic events that have enlivened the summer days and that have attracted the attention of thousands of people. Just think of the “Gaeta Jazz Festival” and “Arena Virgilio” reviews and the “Storie Diffuse” literary festival. Therefore, there is certainly no shortage of reasons to consider ourselves satisfied”.
