Egyptian archaeologist and former Minister of Antiquities Zahi Hawass has started a petition to bring back a work of art belonging to Queen Nefertiti to Egypt, according to the Reuters news agency. The piece was illegally brought to Berlin more than a hundred years ago.
The famous painted bust of Nefertiti was discovered in 1912 at Tell el-Amarna, about 300 kilometers south of the Egyptian capital Cairo. This happened during a German archaeological mission. The following year, the German team brought the find to Berlin.
The artwork has been on display at the Neues Museum in Berlin since April 1924.
The archaeologist stresses that his petition is not calling for the return of artefacts that were legally taken from Egypt. His campaign is aimed solely at the return of ‘three magnificent objects’, including the bust of Nefertiti, the Rosetta Stone and the Dendera zodiac.
Hawass’ petition has now been signed more than 200,000 times.
