A 21-year-old man from Antwerp has been arrested by the Belgian police for stealing an ambulance. He is suspected of having driven the vehicle.
Three men stole the ambulance yesterday, while the medical staff was busy helping someone in an apartment building. They filmed their action themselves, but were also recognizable in the picture on the ambulance’s dashcam.
According to the newspaper Gazet van Antwerpen, the emergency services only noticed that the ambulance was gone when they walked over because they needed more medical equipment.
The joyride didn’t last long: after about 250 meters they left the car behind. Watch the remarkable footage here:
The laughing joyriders are recognizable on the image.
“While our people were busy inside to provide the necessary medical care, three guests apparently thought it would be funny to go joyriding with the ambulance,” a spokesperson for the ambulance service told the Gazet van Antwerpen. The service is outraged by what happened.
First suspect released again
Yesterday evening a 22-year-old man reported himself to the police. He confessed, was arrested and brought before the investigating judge. After questioning, the man was released on conditions.
The third suspect is still being sought. The newspaper HLN reports that the maximum penalty for joyriding in Belgium is three years in prison and a fine.
