In the world of manga, there are authors who, through their most successful works, manage to become true references capable of influencing other mangakas. Junji Ito is, without a doubt, one of them. At 61 years old, he remains a legend in the industry and a master of the seinen genre and especially of Japanese horror.
Influenced by writers such as HP Lovecraft, many of Ito’s stories feature the introduction of their protagonists into terrifying and impossible situations. On the other hand, the popularity of this mangaka is at an especially high point thanks to the imminent release of Uzumaki, the ambitious adaptation of what may be his most famous manga to date.
The disturbing trailers that Adult Swim has shared in recent weeks have made Uzumaki one of the most anticipated anime of the year. In them we have also been able to see Kirie Goshima and her boyfriend Shuichi Saito, who will witness experiences as strange as they are disturbing. Just like we did with the female protagonist, in this article we have decided to share some of the most terrifying moments that Saito experienced in the Uzumaki manga.
The following lines contain spoilers for the Uzumaki manga.
Shuichi Saito, another victim of the terrifying Uzumaki spirals
Unlike Kirie, Shuichi Saito spends much of his time outside the village. Because of this, Saito eventually found that whenever he returned to Kurouzu Village, he felt an uneasy and stressful feeling inside. He warned a skeptical Kirie that there was something about the village that he couldn’t stand and that they should leave as soon as possible. Things got even more complicated for Shuichi when his father began to experience an unhealthy obsession with spirals.
Before long, Shuichi’s father began to act aggressively, and days later he was found dead in his bathtub, literally turned into a human spiral. This event disturbed Shuichi and drove his mother insane, who died days later after developing an irreversible fear of anything shaped like a spiral. From this point on, the young man’s mood worsened seriously.
In Chapter 4 of the manga, a visibly thinner Shuichi also began to feel fear of anything spiral-shaped, and discovered that the pond near Kirie’s house was a hotbed of bad energy, as it gathered numerous angry spirits within it.
In the following chapters, strange phenomena among the inhabitants of Kurouzu became more and more frequent, and Shuichi did not hesitate to warn that these were related to the spirals that drove his parents mad. The young man also saved Kirie’s life on several occasions, but his relationship with her became somewhat more strained due to the depression that was taking hold of him, forcing him to eat less and take refuge at home as much as possible.
In contrast to his mood, Shuichi’s intuition improved, and in episode 12 he predicted that a typhoon was about to arrive to destroy part of the village. It didn’t take long for the typhoon to appear and took special interest in chasing Kirie, forcing Shuichi to take care of her and expose himself to this dangerous phenomenon on several occasions.
In the final stretch of Uzumaki, Shuichi warns the rest of the characters that the spirals are everywhere and even inside them. He also begins to have hallucinations related to the twisted corpse of his father and tried to escape from Kurouzu with Kirie, Tetsuo and Chie, without any success.
Finally, in the last chapter of the manga, Saito was forced to fall down a huge hole that led him to some colossal spiral-shaped ruins that were under the village of Kurouzu. Tired and depressed, Shuichi meets Kirie again and asks her to let him die in this strange place, but our protagonist decides to embrace him and share with him the same fate: to turn into stone and be eternally close to those enigmatic structures.
The Uzumaki anime is directed by Hiroshi Nagahama and will consist of 4 episodes animated by the talented Studio Drive. It will premiere on September 28 and it is expected that the series will also be available in Spain through the Max platform.
