Paris, 8 September 2024 – A record-breaking edition comes to a close for Italy Teamat Paris Paralympics 2024The Azzurri won 71 medals, including 24 golds obtained with determination, emotion and commitment. The titles are 10 more than in Tokyo 2020. And the The Italian delegation brought 141 athletes who competed in 17 disciplines.
During the closing ceremony, they will be Domiziana Maecenas and Ndiaga Dieng to bring the Tricolour (swimming and athletics, with splendid fourth places).
“Following the decision of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella to welcome the athletes who almost reached the podium at the Quirinale, we decided together with the Head of Mission and General Secretary of the CIP Juri Stara to nominate the two youngest fourth place winners in Paris, to give the signal of a movement that has confirmed itself but also looks to the future, and proof of this is the extraordinary number of 52 debutants at the Games”, declared the President of the Italian Paralympic Committee, Luca Pancalliduring the closing press conference held at Le Pre-Catelan, a 19th-century residence that hosted Casa Italia. As reported by comitatoparalimpico.it.
“Repeating Tokyo 2020 seemed like a very difficult undertaking but we did it. So many emotions experienced in these days, certainly in my suitcase I also bring back bitter emotions, like that of Giacomo Perini – because that of our rower remains a medal for me – and then obviously that of Ambra Sabatini in the 100 meters final.
This result and the fact that we won medals in 11 disciplines demonstrates that the horizontal policy undertaken by the CIP together with the sports federations is the right one”.
“I have always been convinced that in the international Paralympic world there are no revolutions but long processes of contamination that start from afar. There is much talk of the importance of the London 2012 Paralympic Games as the watershed between before and after, but London was fundamental for us for the many hours of live broadcasting by RAI. Without the presence of the public broadcaster, some iconic images of those Games – I am thinking, for example, of those of Alex Zanardi – would not exist”.
“To date, I am convinced that the CIP is among the greatest transformative agents of civil society. We are changing society. I think of those who are passionate about the Paralympics – and there are truly many – they will certainly be better people because they are able to accept every type of diversity”. Only canoeing, for Italy, on the last day of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
Opening with the finals of the women’s KL1 200m and Italy represented by Eleonora De Paolis. The veteran of CC Aniene, at her third Paralympic experience, competes in a historic final crossing the finish line with the eighth time of 1:01.56. Honors and Paralympic title for the Chilean Katherinne Wollermann, leader and PGB (Paralympic Games Best) in 51.95. Silver medal for the forty-one-year-old Ukrainian, 2023 world champion and already second in Tokyo, Maryna Mazhula. The bronze medal, instead, is around the neck of the German already Paralympic champion in Tokyo, Edina Muller, in 47.01.
The second and final final of the Paralympic Games bears the signature of Amanda Embriaco (Can. Sanremo). A race characterized by less than optimal pelvic conditions, with the Italian protagonist of an exciting sprint race in the 200m, closing in seventh place with a time of 50.49. Perfect exit from the blocks and fast propulsion phase: a performance that places Amanda among the best in the world in the category. Under the roar coming from the sold out stands, the podium remains unchanged three years after Tokyo: the British Laura Sugar wins in 46.66, with a Paralympic record, followed by the home darling Nella Barbosa for France, silver in 47.91, while the bronze once again goes to the German Felicia Laberer in 48.79.
