The critically acclaimed The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom surprised players with its innovative Fuse ability, which allows you to combine items in creative ways. However, according to recent revelations from Famitsu, Nintendo had even more ambitious plans for this mechanic before the open-world game’s release.
During the Computer Entertainment Development Conference in Japan, director Hidemaro Fujibayashi and engineer Kenichi Hirose shared details about the game’s development process, and one of the most notable revelations focused on how the combo ability was originally much more complex.
In the early stages of development, players were able to fuse multiple items together in spectacular ways. For example, Link’s shield could be combined with two swords, which not only allowed him to cut through everything around him as he walked, but also acted as an additional defense. Another notable example was the combination of a large Bokoblin’s Horn with a gun.
The developers had even considered the possibility of using the sound of combo weapons to control Bokoblins, a feature that would have added an interesting strategic layer given the abundance of these enemies in the game. The option of using the Zonnan glider on Link’s back to fly around and allowing players to choose the orientation of materials when combining was also explored.
However, these complex ideas were scrapped in favor of a simplified version of the combo ability that is more accessible and easier for players to understand, but still functional. While some fans lament the loss of these more chaotic options, many are pleased with the final ability.
