There are many mangakas who have achieved a certain status within the industry due to the popularity of their works, as well as the influence of these on other authors and new generations. We have already seen great examples such as Akira Toriyama himself, who inspired many well-known authors with his work. But there is one who has not had such an impact, but has also made a name for himself. We are referring to Tatsuki Fujimoto.
This mangaka has become very popular due to the great success and acceptance of Chainsaw Man, the story of Denji in a world full of curses and corruption. But this is not the only one, as he has also created other very interesting titles, such as Fire Punch, Goodbye Eri and also Look Back. The latter has recently been adapted to film format and has surprised even its author. And this great reception has shown that Fujimoto is not a one-hit wonder mangaka.
The Look Back film proves that Fujimoto is a very versatile artist with several hits
It is important to note that Tatsuki Fujimoto is often praised for his unique way of telling stories, as evidenced in titles such as Chainsaw Man, for example. But that is not all, as he has a great talent for designing masterful stories that prevail over time.
Chainsaw Man is not the typical story of a hero who is admired by everyone, but it is something completely different. In fact, the protagonist has not only suffered a lot in life, but it seems that this will not end and this is what has shaped his twisted mentality.
While it is true that Chainsaw Man is one of his most popular manga, it is not the only one. Through his one-shots he has shown that he is capable of telling a great story in just a few pages. And these are narratives that often end up being shocking for his audience, which is something that is already characteristic of the author.
In the case of Look Back, this has been a very interesting and moderately successful story, but thanks to its adaptation to film, it will be able to reach many more people, who will be surprised by Fujimoto’s great narrative quality.
Look Back is a peculiar story, as we meet the artists Kyomoto and Fujino, and an interesting detail is that the names of these girls are the same as the author’s, so they could be two halves of him. The lives of these young women are narrated in an exceptional way in this story, which is also very profound.
Initially, this work shows us Fujino making a short comic strip style manga for her school. Here she receives praise from her classmates, but the situation changes when a classmate also sends her work to the school newspaper, which is of a higher quality. This makes Fujino feel frustrated with this, so she stops drawing for a while.
Eventually, Fujino must deliver a diploma to the home of a student who, to her surprise, is the one who created the manga that beat hers in the newspaper. Her name is Kyomoto. From here, a great adventure begins for these girls who are artists with great talent and determination. But that’s not all, because there is also a lot of tension and drama, especially when one’s work receives more attention than the other’s, thus generating jealousy and internal conflicts.
This is a story that addresses the joy of creation, but also the devastating tragedy of loss. All of this from the perspective of these young artists. It is a great journey that will allow viewers to analyze themselves internally and empathize with the characters, as they are extremely charismatic.
Fujimoto himself has said that this adaptation has exceeded his expectations and made him cry. Not to mention that other greats in the industry have spoken about it, such as Studio Ghibli, and others have recommended it, such as Hideo Kojima, for example.
