A tough race
“It was a very long race, especially in the final part, also because I didn’t understand how many laps were left. We decided to start with slicks and when it started to rain obviously the grip was zero. I came in to change tires, maybe a lap late, and when I got back on track I found myself in contact with Alex Lowes. I tried to keep my pace without forcing, because the track conditions were really difficult. When he passed me I still maintained my race pace. He pushed hard and fell and at that point I had to manage the position.”
A victory that makes you happy?
“Winning this race was incredible, especially considering the horrible conditions we raced in. Of course, my and Toprak’s dream was to get on the podium together, but we still have other races to try.”
And how are you doing on dry surfaces?
“In the dry I am improving every time I go out on track, and in the last races I have shown it. I just need to ride and stay on track. I am still changing my riding style to be able to exploit the full potential of my bike, but it is not easy. The closer you get to those in front, the less you can think about your riding style. You ride instinctively to try to stay with them. I have learned and am learning a lot from Toprak, because I am convinced that he is riding our bike in the best way possible.”
It wasn’t easy last year because of the injuries and the rumours that you were not going to renew with BMW.
“The last two years have not been easy at all, especially because of the injuries that have kept me away from the tracks for a long time, and at this level it is not easy to return. Luckily I have always believed in myself and I have managed to make great improvements especially this year. At BMW they understood all this and have reconfirmed me. Thanks to the arrival of Toprak the bike has improved a lot, and I with it. In difficult moments you must never give up, you must stay calm and believe. I am lucky to have a wife who has always supported me and backed me and this, together with the love for my son, has helped me a lot”.
