Like Manuel Neuer, Toni Kroos and Ilkay Gündogan, Thomas Müller ended his career in the national team after the European Championship in the summer and will go down in German football history not only because of his 131 international matches (45 goals). In addition to all his sporting qualities, Müller always stood for human greatness, great team spirit and a high fun factor. His great achievements and performances in the German national jersey should be duly recognised, just like those of his former teammates in the German kit. This was explained by DFB sports director Rudi Völler. “We will bid our players a fitting farewell in the vicinity of one of our next home games and give the whole thing a nice and appropriate setting,” said the 64-year-old in a Bild Interview.
Völler does not see the end of his sporting career in the national team as the final end of a shared future between the German national team and Thomas Müller. Quite the opposite. As Völler said, he could imagine Müller “anywhere”. Völler also believes that the Bayern professional is predestined to be an official in a club.
“I always try to convince ex-players to take on the job of sports director or coach. But of course, these jobs require a lot of strength. That’s why it’s ultimately a very personal decision. I can very well imagine Thomas in a responsible role anywhere, whether in an association or in a club. He has the intellect and empathy to fulfil such a task,” says Völler, convinced of Müller’s qualities for a possible career in football after his own active career.
It is still up in the air whether the Bayern icon will remain involved in football in any way after his playing career, and at the moment we can still enjoy Müller’s qualities on the pitch. However, it is quite conceivable that “Radio Müller” would find many open doors among Bayern fans as a coach on the sidelines of the Allianz Arena.
